    St. Petersburg and the Emirate of Sharjah (UAE) are getting closer

    From July 17 to July 23, 2019, the Days of Sharjah were held in St. Petersburg for the first time in Russia.

    The festival was organized by the Government of Sharjah with the assistance of the Committee on External Relations of St. Petersburg and the Committee on Culture of St. Petersburg.

    The events were attended by representatives of the Sharjah Government, including the Department of Intergovernmental Relations, the Department of Culture, the Department of Museums, the Committee for the Development of Commerce and Culture, as well as representatives of the Sharjah Heritage Institute, Sharjah International Airport and the Cultural Center of Sheikh Sultan Al Qasimi Cultural Center.

    A large-scale exposition was organized in the atrium of the Commandant’s House of the Peter and Paul Fortress, which included historical artifacts, copies of old maps, photographs, national costumes, crafts, jewelry, and Arabic calligraphy.

    The opening ceremony was attended by Director of the Department of Intergovernmental Relations Sharjah Sheikh Fahim Al Qasimi, Deputy Chairman of the Committee on External Relations of St. Petersburg Vyacheslav Kalganov and Director of the State Museum of the History of St. Petersburg Alexander Kolyakin.

    For Petersburgers and guests of the city were artists - members of the folklore group from the emirate of Sharjah.

    Particular emphasis was placed on cooperation in the field of tourism. At a seminar on tourism, representatives of Sharjah and travel companies of St. Petersburg shared their experiences in promoting the tourism potential of their regions.

    For reference: Sharjah is the third largest emirate of the seven members of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). It is the only emirate with access to the East and West coast of the Arabian Peninsula. In 1998, Sharjah was proclaimed the Cultural Capital of the Arab World for its achievements in the field of culture and preservation of Arab heritage. In 2015, the emirate of Sharjah was recognized as the capital of Arab tourism. The Emirate is declared the World Book Capital of 2019.
