    On October 08-11, 2013 a business mission of St. Petersburg took place in Limassol (Cyprus).

    The mission was held in accordance with the agreement with the Municipality of Limassol in the framework of the cooperation agreement signed in 2012.

    The mission was held in accordance with the agreement with the Municipality of Limassol in the framework of the cooperation agreement signed in 2012.

    The delegation of St. Petersburg included the representatives from:
    - Executive bodies (the Committee for External Relations, the Committee for Science and Higher Education, Education Committee);
    - Government bodies ( the Coordination Center of the international scientific, technical, and educational programs, City Tourist Information Center , Zerkalniy Center for Children and Youth Creativity, ELTECH JSC.);
    - Universities of St. Petersburg that signed the cooperation agreement with the Technological University of Cyprus (St. Petersburg National Research University of Information Technologies, Mechanics and Optics (RTMO), St. Petersburg State University of Telecommunications named after M.A. Bonch – Bruevich, St. Petersburg State University of Service and Economics, St. Petersburg College of hospitality) .

    On October 9, the roundtable discussion dedicated to the start of "Ideas of the universities into the practice of cities" project was held at the Technological University of Cyprus.

    The project was initiated by the Committee for External Relations of St. Petersburg together with the Committee for Science and Higher Education, the Municipality of Limassol and the Technological University of Cyprus.

    The goal was the support of the innovative university development, applicable for the solutions of the actual issues of municipal services and serving the interests of the population. From the Cypriot side, along with the Technological University, the roundtable discussion was attended by the representatives of branch departments of the Municipality of Limassol, urban services, as well as the Ministry of Communications and Public Works of Cyprus. Mr. Savvas Stupas , the Deputy Mayor of Limassol and Elpida Keravnou, the Rector of the Technological University of Cyprus  greeted the participants. The Technological University of Cyprus plays a significant role in the life of Limassol. Research and development of the university in various fields are widely used by municipal authorities for decision-making in the planning of social economic development of the city: from the monitoring of environmental parameters (quality of water, air, cleanliness of streets and beaches) and the creation of a special database on the basis of the collected geo information – to the harmonious functioning of the city (historic building renovation, construction of new housing, the organization of public transport, spatial planning, etc.). A number of projects were presented at the roundtable discussion.

    Among suggestions made by St. Petersburg are the following: RTMO and ELTECH technological company project in solar energy sphere; Informative and Communication Systems for the Road Traffic Safety of St. Petersburg State University of Telecommunications named after M.A. Bonch – Bruevich. During the panel discussion opinions on the possibilities of collaboration within the European programs ТEMPUS, DIAULOS, distance learning, application of information technology, training of personnel for tourism and hotel management sphere; student and teacher exchange programs, holding of collaborative seminars were shared. Apart from this, as a part of program the meetings with the Mayor of Lemesos, Mr. Andreas Christou took place. It was agreed to organize annual summer vocation for orphaned children and children deprived of parental care in Limassol and St. Petersburg (at the children’s creativity center “Zazerkalny”), to organize language camp in Limassol and St. Petersburg. The Mayor of Lemesos also welcomed the project of solar energy development proposed by St. Petersburg National Research University of Information Technologies, Mechanics and Optics and ELTECH.

    Regarding this issue, on October 10 the meeting with the managers of the Cyprus Investment Promotion Association (CIPA) took place.  Mr. S.V. Osadchiy, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Russia to Cyprus, taking part in the mission program,  mentioned the importance of the events in Limassol and the suggested possibilities of further strengthening of friendly ties between Russia and Cyprus.
