    Eibhlin Byrne, Lord Mayor of Dublin (Ireland) visited St.Petersburg

    The official delegation of Dublin (Ireland), led by E. Byrne, Lord Mayor, visited St.Petersburg on March 22 through 24, 2009.

    The official delegation of Dublin (Ireland), led by E. Byrne, Lord Mayor, visited St.Petersburg on March 22 through 24, 2009.

    During the visit, the delegation of Dublin, as well as the representatives of the Embassy of Ireland, met with the members of the Association of Pro-Rectors for International Relations of high-education institutions of St.Petersburg, and attendted a roundtable in St.Petersburg State University of Economics and Finance devoted to the prospects of bilateral cooperation in the areas of business, education, and tourism.

    The Dublin delegation visited Russian National Library to see the rare Irish books, including the works of Irish composer John Field. V.N. Zaitsev, RNL General Director, handed Ms Byrne a copy of Nocturne No 8 by John Field with the author’s remarks.

    E. Byrne, Lord Mayor of Dublin, met in Smolny with V.I. Matvienko, Governor of St.Petersburg. During the meeting, the prospects of bilateral cooperation were discussed, in the areas of innovations, industry, construction, science and high education, and culture.

    Ms Byrne also met with A.V. Prokhorenko, Chairman of the Committee for External Relations of St.Petersburg, and S.A. Fiveyskiy, First Deputy Chairman of the Committee for Economic Development, Industrial Policy, and Trade, as well as with the directorial board of JSC «Technopark of St.Petersburg» and the territorial administration of regional special economic zones in St.Petersburg.

    The delegation from Dublin visited the celebration of the 5th anniversary of the Irish Cultural Center at the Faculty of Philology and Arts of St.Petersburg State University, and visited the Museum of G.R. Derzhavin, to attend the concert devoted to the Irish composer John Field, performed by the students of the St.Petersburg Musical College named after M.P. Musorgskiy.

    The Lord Mayor also met with M.B. Piotrovskiy, Director of the Hermitage, and visited the Museum of V.V. Nabokov, to watch the art exhibition «The Land of Heart's Desire – W.B. Yeats», comprising the exclusive photos of Ireland by the Irish Cultural Center at St.Petersburg State University, and children’s drawings created by the pupils of St.Petersburg and Leningrad Region, who took part in cultural and educational project «I'm Dreaming of Ireland» during the 2008/2009 schoolyear.
