Society of Handicraft and Agricultural Labour (ORT), which contributed to promotion and encouraging of qualified professional work among the Jews of Russia, was founded in St.Petersburg in 1880. The initiator of ORT was famous scientist Nikolay Bakst. He proposed Samuel Polyakov, a railroad magnate, and Horace Ginzburg, a banker, to sponsor a foundation for the establishment of such a society.

Today, the World Society of Handicraft Labour is a large international educational and enlightening organization highly appreciated by the United Nations.

In 1990s, ORT opened one of the first offices of post-Soviet Union in St.Petersburg. ORT is working in St.Petersburg, providing the Petersburgers with services of additional education. Some of the earliest computer training courses in the city were opened on the basis of ORT computer classes.

ORT pays great attention to school education. ORT experts run master classes in international forums “Elderly Generation” and “Youth Wave” at LenExpo.
