    St. Petersburg strengthens cooperation with UN-Habitat concerning the Sustainable Cities Development

    The meeting was held as the result of the business mission of St. Petersburg to Barcelona in November 2015, during which St. Petersburg was invited to join the City Resilience Profiling Program.

    The meeting was held as the result of the business mission of St. Petersburg to Barcelona in November 2015, during which St. Petersburg was invited to join the City Resilience Profiling Program.

    The City Resilience Profiling Program (CRPP) focuses on providing national and local governments with tools for measuring and increasing resilience to multi-hazard impacts. The main objective of the program is the development of international recommendations in the sphere of urban planning and development to increase resilience and sustainability of urban systems. UN-Habitat program started in 2013. The headquarters is located in Barcelona. This city actively participates in the program and is a unique model for developing of Habitat policies in the field of sustainability.

    The meeting was attended by heads of profile committees of St. Petersburg: the Committee for Economic Policy and Strategic Planning of St. Petersburg, the Committee for Industrial Policy and Innovation of St. Petersburg, the Committee for Property Relations, the Finance Committee, the Committee for Urban Planning and Architecture, the Committee for Energy and Engineering Support.        

    The possibility of participation of St. Petersburg in the City Resilience Profiling Program was discussed during the meeting.

    The Vice Governor of St. Petersburg M.P. Mokretsov noted the importance of the meeting and expressed the interest in cooperation on the Habitat projects for further actual use to the benefit of the city.

    According to D. Lewis, as a result of the urbanization process, affecting all settlements in the world, the issues of sustainable urban development, the ability to withstand the current multi-hazard impacts take the prominent place in the activities of Habitat in recent years and attract more international attention when it comes to the adoption of the new global agenda for urban development.

    Participation of St. Petersburg in the program is also important for Habitat in terms of exchange of experience in the development of northern cities.  

    Currently, Habitat is developing and testing Sustainable City Indicators, which will be presented during Barcelona Resilience Week in the middle of March 2016. In this connection, an agreement on the participation of representatives of St. Petersburg in the event was reached.

    The Vice Governor of St. Petersburg M.P. Mokretsov for his part invites Mr. D. Lewis to take part in the St. Petersburg International Spatial Development Forum "Harmony in Complexity".
