The meeting was held as a part of Mr. Nasser’s official visit to the Russian Federation on the occasion of the 70th Anniversary of the United Nations.

The meeting was also attended by the Chairman of the Committee for External Relations E.D. Grigoriev, the Deputy Representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in St. Petersburg I.V. Demyanenko, and the First Deputy Chairman of the Committee for International Relations and Implementation of Migration Policy V.Ya. Okrushko.

The Alliance of Civilizations was established in 2005 at the initiative of Spain and Turkey with the purpose of consolidating efforts of countries and civil society in overcoming cultural separation and detachment and preventing a civilizational split. The main priorities of the Alliance are education, youth policy, mass media, development of intercultural and interreligious dialogue, and migration policy.

Russia interacts with the Alliance of Civilization on the basis of the National Plan of the Russian Federation for Promotion of Relationships with the Alliance of Civilizations endorsed by the President of our country. In the course of the meeting, Nassir Nasser expressed his interest in cooperation with St. Petersburg and the city’s participation in the projects implemented by the Alliance of Civilizations. In the opinion of the UN High Representative, Russia and St. Petersburg show the civilized world an example of intercultural and interethnic concord. Vice Governor Vladimir Kirillov in his turn emphasized that maintaining harmonious and stable interreligious relationships and relationships between the state and religion are a high priority task in the work of the Government of St. Petersburg. Moreover, St. Petersburg was invited to participate in the Global Forum of the Alliance of Civilizations to be held in April next year in Baku, and in the long run to become its new host city.
