    On May 5 a meeting of V.N. Garnets, Head of Vyborgsky district of St. Petersburg, with Avangelos Lampakis, Mayor of Alexandroupolis, was organized by the Committee for External Relations of St. Petersburg for the purpose of facilitating cooperation of St. Petersburg with regions of Greece

    An agreement on signing a protocol on cooperation between the city council of Alexandroupolis and the administration of Vyborgsky district of St. Petersburg was reached in the course of the meeting.

    Social sphere and education including organization of vacations for children, cultural exchange, and tourism development were especially emphasized by the participants of the meeting among other promising areas of cooperation.

    The Mayor of Alexandroupolis Avangelos Lampakis showed special interest in developing relations with St. Petersburg and attracting Russian business to Alexandroupolis. The Mayor of Alexandroupolis confirmed the possibility of admitting schoolchildren from Vyborgsky district for summer vacations as early as this year.

    Background information:

    The city of Alexandroupolis is located in Northern Greece close to the border with Bulgaria and Turkey. The population of the city is over 72 thousand people; 10% of the residents are Russian-speaking. The city accommodates 2 departments (Pedagogical and Medical) of the Democretian University of Thrace, one of the largest universities in Greece. Nowadays the city is actively developing its logistics complex with a large seaport at its core.
