During the visit, the veterans took part in a round table discussion on the contribution of Arctic convoys in the Second World War victory. British veterans visited the British Consulate General and St.Petersburg schools.
Arctic convoys delivered the food, weapons, equipment, and supplies to the northern ports – Arkhangelsk and Murmansk, when the Soviet Union had hard times.
Totally, 78 convoys were delivered, involving 1400 merchant ships, only between August 1941 and May 1945. The total volume of goods delivered was $11.3 billion.
The city on the Neva riversides that has survived a 900-day siege, annually observes the events devoted to the Arctic convoys. In 2011, the 70th anniversary of the first Arctic convoy “Dervish” arrival in Russia was celebrated in St.Petersburg .
