On May 15, 2012, Denis Chouinard, Chief of Political and Public Affairs Department at Canadian Embassy in Russia, lectureed on "The 70th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations between Canada and Russia: History of Bilateral Relations" at St.Petersburg State University of Economics and Finance.
The meeting was attended by the representatives of St.Petersburg Committee for External Relations.
D.Chouinard told the students about the history of establishment of friendly relations between Canada and Russia, and the peculiarities of contemporary dialogue in politics, culture, and economy.
Diplomatic relations between the USSR and Canada were commenced on June 12, 1942. The relations with Canada rest on a well-developed contractual basis. The cooperation in world affairs is actively carried out, including those in the framework of various international forums (G8 summits, sessions of the UN, OSCE Ministerial Council meeting, etc.). An important part of the bilateral relations is the development of Nordic cooperation – Canada and Russia are actively cooperating within the confines of the Arctic Council (AC). The communications due to the business dialogue are getting more intensive.
The students asked the speaker about hockey and about the attitude of Canadians toward Russia.
The lecture of the Canadian Embassy was the first in a series of commemorative events.
