On November 16, 2011, the International Day of Tolerance, Daniil Aleksandrovich Granin, a prominent public figure and writer, lectured at the Russian Ethnographic Museum. The event, organized by St.Petersburg Committee for External Relations within the framework of “Tolerance” Program, marked the beginning of the open lecture series “The Idea of Russian Nation” by famous representatives of culture, art, and mass-media of the Northern Capital.

“I want to avoid the high-flying opening remarks and go straight to the point. I haven’t been giving any speeches for long. I am glad to see that so many people have gathered here, and not only from St.Petersburg – many came from other cities and countries”, so began Daniil Aleksandrovich his speaking.

In his lecture, he was reckoning about the “rights of others to be different”; shared his opinions on issues of multiculturalism in Europe; spoke on the topic of a new cultural reality faced by St.Petersburg with the intensification of migration; drew the parallels with the influx of “limitchik” in post-war Leningrad. The common thread through his speech was the idea of the perception of the situation from the perspective of kindness and understanding, recognition of diversity and the historical role of St.Petersburg in the education of behavioral and speech culture newcomers.
