    A Conference Devoted to the 150th anniversary of the Italian Risorgimento Held in St.Petersburg

    On October 20, a two-day conference on “The Italian Risorgimento and Russia” was held in the conference hall of the Russian National Library (165 Moscowskiy Ave), by the initiative of the St.Petersburg Association for International Cooperation and with the support of St.Petersburg Committee for External Relations and the Consulate General of Italy. The event was held in accordance with St.Petersburg program of the Year of Russian-Italian Culture and Language.

The event was held in accordance with St.Petersburg program of the Year of Russian-Italian Culture and Language.

    The conference participants included the descendants of Giuseppe Garibaldi, and Francesco Guida, Head of the Faculty of Political Science at the University Roma Tre.

    L.Estero, Consul General of Italy in St.Petersburg, addressed a greeting to the participants of the conference. The scientific part of the conference started with a presentation of the Russian edition of the monograph by F. Guida on the life of Michelangelo Pinto – a member of the national liberation movement in Italy, the writer, and the First Consul of Italy in St.Petersburg, who taught at St.Petersburg University for more than a quarter of century.

    Two exhibitions were opened at the conference in the halls of the National Library as well:
    • “The Life of Giuseppe Mazzini.” The materials were provided by the Italian Society of Mazzini. They talk about an Italian writer and political figure of the era of Risorgimento and his contribution to the formation of united Italy.
    • “Under the Colours of the United Kingdom. On the 150th Anniversary of the Italian Risorgimento”. This book-illustrative exhibition from the collections of the National Library presented the publications of the XIX–XX centuries: books, albums, maps, autographs, and other exhibits.
