In accordance with a program of international cooperation between St.Petersburg State University of Architecture and Construction (StPb SUAC) and University of Maryland (USA), with the support of the Committee for Urban Planning and Architecture and the Committee for External Relations, Russian-American Summer School was run in St.Petersburg for the fifth time in June and July, 2012.
The program was attended by 16 U.S. and 19 St.Petersburg students majoring in architecture.
On July 6, the final presentation demonstrated the projects implemented by Russian and American students at the “V Russian-American Summer School on Urban Planning”. The topic of the final seminar of the project was the reconstruction of the industrial area at Obvodny Kanal between Moskovskiy Avenue and Rybinskaya Street.
Students take turns to tell about their project, analysis of social, ecological, historical, cultural, architectural, engineering and traffic conditions at the site in question and the adjacent areas, the study of the real estate market in the city and in the area of the project, and financial analysis of project proposals following the international methods.
During a month, the students of the summer school were engaged in the research and analysis of the city district, located on the Obvodny Kanal in the industrial belt surrounding the historic center of St.Petersburg.

The students’ proposal on architecture and planning to use and reconstruct the site was to transform the industrial area at Obvodny Kanal between Moskovskiy Avenue and Rybinskaya Street into one comfort zone, which would include green spots, residential and office buildings, parks, roads and pedestrian areas, squares, museums, libraries, restaurants, playgrounds, schools, and kindergartens. The main task of the students was to perfectly fit the new architectural objects into existing historic housing, and they were up to this task.
“For the projects of the seminar, we always choose the most important sites of St.Petersburg”, said V.K.Linov, Head of Program at the StPb SUAC, Associate Professor, Honorary Architect of Russia.
This year’s theme that became for the students a subject of consideration and the reconstruction was offered by Yu.K.Mityurev, Principal Architect of St.Petersburg.
“The project is good as of both the layout and its functionality”, said Professor S.V.Sementsov, Dean of the Faculty of Architecture, Doctor of Architecture. “The guys have found a true context, so that the project is carried out very “Petersburg-wise”.
