On February 20, 2011, A.V. Prokhorenko, Member of St.Petersburg Government, Chairman of the Committee for External Relations of St.Petersburg, made a speech at the ceremony of opening the Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church of St.John after the restoration.

On behalf of St.Petersburg Governor V.I. Matvienko and the city government, he expressed the gratitude to the Government of the Republic of Estonia, as well as the Consulate General of Estonia in St.Petersburg, for their activities aimed at restoring the church, which became a new important step in strengthening cooperation with our city and Republic of Estonia.

The ceremony was attended by a delegation of the Estonian Republic, headed by President T.H. Ilves.

The church building was erected through the efforts of the Estonian community of St.Petersburg with the support of the Russian Emperor Alexander II and was first consecrated on November 27, 1860. This building is associated with the names of prominent Estonian individuals: priests, educators, folklorists, musicians, composers, and artists.

Now, 150 years after, the temple got its second birth and re-opened its doors for the Estonian community, as well as for all Petersburgers and the guests of our city.

Being in the neighborhood (54 Litera A, Dekabristov St.) with the Mariinsky Theatre, Opera and Ballet Theatre at the Conservatoire named after NA Rimskiy-Korsakov, and a number of churches of various confessions, the Church of St.John is promising to become a new spiritual center and a worthy concert venue of the cultural capital.
