    UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Visited St.Petersburg

    On February 18, 2011, Navanethem Pillay, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, met in Smolny with V.V.Tikhonov, Vice-Governor of St.Petersburg.

    On February 18, 2011, Navanethem Pillay, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, met in Smolny with V.V.Tikhonov, Vice-Governor of St.Petersburg.

    The meeting was attended by the leaders of St.Petersburg Committee for External Relations, the Committee on Law, Order and Security, the Federal Migration Service over St.Petersburg and Leningrad Region, the Commission on Human Rights in St.Petersburg etc.

    During the conversation, Ms Pillay and her colleagues examined the St.Petersburg experience of human rights protection, interaction with civil society organizations, and prevention of the racial and ethnic discrimination, including the results of the implementation of St.Petersburg Government Program “Tolerance”.

    Summarizing the results of the meeting, Ms Pillay described her impressions. According to her opinion, the Program “Tolerance” is not only a successful example of how to instill the tolerance in Russia, it is an example deserving to be known by her colleagues in other countries around the world.
