July 9, 2009 marked 85 years since the foundation of Society for Cooperation in Studying Russia and Soviet Union (SCRSS). A.V. Prokhorenko, Chairman of the Committee for External Relations of St.Petersburg, sent congratulations to Honorary Secretary of the Society of Jean Turner.

Society for Cooperation in Studying Russia and Soviet Union (SCRSS) emerged in 1924 (then the Society of Cultural Relations between the British Commonwealth and the USSR) after the establishment of diplomatic relations between United Kingdom and the USSR. The Society was founded by representatives from a wide range of British intelligence, and for many years in Britain was the center of educational, scientific and cultural contacts between Britain and Russia. In 1992 the company got its present name.

Nowadays, the society works with the Russian governmental and social organizations, promotes the advancement of Russian culture in the UK, offers an opportunity to study Russian language. The Society hosts a library in Russian, and an archive for anyone interested in Russian language and culture.

Since April 2007, with the support of the Society and the Committee on External Relations of St.Petersburg the tradition was revived to hold in London annual seminars on Russian language and contemporary aspects of Russian society.
