    St.Petersburg Hosted the Day of Sweden

    On June 27, 2009, the Day of Sweden was run in St.Petersburg, which already became a traditional festivity for the citizens in Malaya Konyushennaya Street. The festivity was organized by the Consulate General of Sweden in cooperation with «ArtEast» company and with the participation of Swedish companies and organizations operating in Russia.

    This year's Day of Sweden was attached to the three landmark events at once – the National Day of Sweden, June 6, the finish of the circumnavigation regatta «Volvo Ocean Race» in St.Petersburg on June 27, and the chairmanship of Sweden in the European Union, started on July 1.

    The opening ceremony of the Day of Sweden was attended by Mr Per Unkel, Governor of Stockholm Region, Mrs L.A. Kostkina, Vice-Governor of St.Petersburg, Mr Gunnar Kling, Consul General of Sweden in St.Petersburg, Mr S. Zaitsev, Deputy Head of the Administration of Central District.

    According to Mrs L.A. Kostkina, Sweden currently is one of the main partners of St.Petersburg in Nordic Europe. Mr Gunnar Kling said that the government of Sweden aimed to keep the Baltic Rim region as one of the leading in Europe by the rates of growth, with St.Petersburg playing a definitely key role in its development.

    The Day of Sweden on 27 June was attended by 19 Swedish companies and organizations that presented their work at the canvas booths, arranged along the pedestrian street.This year's Day of Sweden was visited by a few thousand people who not only got familiar with the activities of participating companies, but also had the opportunity to join a modern Swedish musical culture and to obtain information about the potential for tourism in Sweden.

    The next Day of Sweden is scheduled to be held two years later – in 2011.
