    Delegation of St.Petersburg Visited Gdansk

    On August 31 through September 1, 2009, the delegation of St. Petersburg, headed by L.A. Kostkina, Vice-Governor of St.Petersburg, took part in the commemorative events in Gdansk (Poland) deveted to the 70th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II.

    On August 31 through September 1, 2009, the delegation of St. Petersburg, headed by L.A. Kostkina, Vice-Governor of St.Petersburg, took part in the commemorative events in Gdansk (Poland) deveted to the 70th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II.

    L.A. Kostkina made her appeal within the framework of the International Conference of Mayors of the Cities Symbolizing the Second World War. In her speech, the vice-governor mentioned that «during the Second World War, the Poles, among many peoples, also took part in the battles for Leningrad, and were honoured for that feat by memorial plate at the Memory Alley of Piskarevskoe Cemetery in 2004. 24 Poles were awarded the medals «For the Defence of Leningrad».

    Vice-governor also handed a shell-case with «a handful of sacred soil», brought from Piskarevsky Memorial Cemetery, for laying at the foundation of the building intended for the museum of the Second World War to be established in Gdansk.

    During the visit, the delegation of St.Petersburg took part in the opening of the exhibition, organized by the Historical Museum of the City of Gdansk and devoted to the cities affected by the Second World War.

    The visit was made possible by the invitation of the Mayor of Gdansk Pavel Adamowicz.
