On August 4, 2009, A.V. Prokhorenko, Chairman of the Committee for External Relations of St.Petersburg , met in Smolny with the delegation of Federal State of North Rhine – Westphalia (FRG) visiting Russia within the framework of the program «NRW goes to Russia 2009».
Except for St.Petersburg, the delegation of this German region has already visited several cities in Russia, where they have met with the representatives of business circles and administrative structures.
The Petersburg part of the visit was led by Karl-Uwe Bütow – Head of the Department of Regional Economical Policy, Industry, and Clusters at the Ministry of Economy, Medium-Scale Business, and Power Industry of Federal Land of North Rhine – Westphalia.
During the meeting in Smolny, Karl-Uwe Bütow introduced the industrial potential of the region and described the formation of 16 clusters, which are currently forming the basis of the economy of North Rhine – Westphalia.
A.V. Prokhorenko told the representatives of the German region about the peculiarities of special economic zones that are being created in St.Petersburg, and invited the Land of North Rhine – Westphalia to participate in the 2nd St.Petersburg International Innovation Forum. At the meeting, it was emphasized that St.Petersburg has a great interest in various programs of «innovative breakthrough» implemented in the region of North Rhine – Westphalia, as well as in the activity of the centers for the conveyance of knowledge from universities and research centers to the industry, for example, the organization «TTH LGH eV ».
