    Celebrations dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Leningrad from Nazi siege were held in Berlin (Germany) on March 15th, 2014

    The veterans of the Great Patriotic War were awarded with commemorative tokens “In honor of the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Leningrad from Nazi siege” in the Russian House of Science and Culture in Berlin with the support of the Committee for External Relations of St. Petersburg.

    Greeting message of the Governor of St.Petersburg Georgy Poltavchenko was conveyed to the veterans. It said: “There has never been a heroic deed in world history comparable to the deed of defenders and residents of besieged Leningrad. Thanks to you, our beloved city withstood the Siege and won”.

    Vera Sakharova, Advisor to the Chairman of the Committee for External Relations of St.Petersburg, and Oleg Ksenofontov, Director of the Representative office of Rossotrudnichestvo in Germany awarded defenders and residents of besieged Leningrad with 43 medals.

    Vera Sakharova emphasized that St.Petersburg Government remembers about survivors of the Siege and is grateful for saving our beautiful city and providing opportunity to live and work for its prosperity and greatness. V.Sakharova also invited participants of the meeting to attend the upcoming events in St.Petersburg to commemorate the 69th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War.

    Oleg Ksenofontov noted that in 2014 with the support of Russian diplomatic missions in Germany all the participants of Leningrad defense and siege survivors living in Germany will be awarded with commemorative tokens. The Committee for External Relations of St. Petersburg passed 985 commemorative tokens to be handed out to the veterans of the Great Patriotic War who had been awarded with the medal “For Leningrad defense” and/or token “To the resident of besieged Leningrad”.

    The ceremony was attended by children from the international “Berlin European School” and the instrumental duet “Express”.

    The veterans and visitors were invited to the photo exhibition organized by the State Memorial Museum of Leningrad Defense and Siege. The documentary by Sergey Loznitsa “The Siege”, films of the series “The Unknown War” by Roman Karmen - “Leningrad Siege” were shown to the veterans and visitors. The ceremony was closed by a festive dinner of traditional Russian cuisine.
