The Association of Russian-language teachers in Sweden (CARTS) in collaboration with the School Education Department of Sweden and Södertälje municipality (Sweden) with the support of the Russkiy Mir Foundation and the Committee for External Relations of St. Petersburg are organizing a workshop for Russian-language teachers on November 15-17, 2012 in the city of Södertälje.

The workshop participants include teachers of the Russian language working in Sweden and other European countries. Representatives of the Embassy of the Russian Federation to Sweden, the Department of Education of Sweden (Skolverket), the Södertälje native languages centre and the Association of Russian-language teachers in Sweden have been invited to take part in the official opening of the event.

The guests of honour and participants of the workshop include Irina Kell, director of the Cambridge Russian School, and Julia Gundarina, head of the First Slavic School in Lisbon. The workshop serves as a platform to discuss current trends in teaching the Russian language and scientific studies of bilingualism and to share Internet resources that might be useful for Russian-language teachers. The workshop programme includes lectures and practical classes that will contribute to better work of teachers. These events will be dedicated to the methods of teaching Russian as a mother tongue and as a second language as well as to the adaptation of instructional materials for children in a non-Russian environment.

Teachers will learn how to discuss books with children of different ages, how to read and interpret texts; they will also receive information about efficient methods and techniques that could be used for teaching multi-age students groups as well as the ways to shape emotional worldview in a multiethnic class. A particular emphasis will be placed on teachers’ work with families, parents of children who study the Russian language. Additionally, teachers will have the opportunity not only to learn about new methods of teaching Russian but also to share their own experience. For additional information please contact Alexander Ganin, leading expert of the department for the cooperation with compatriots living abroad, the Committee for External Relations of St. Petersburg.
