    The Partner City of Manchester Celebrates the Victory Day

    Since 2005, the Victory Day is celebrated annually in Manchester (UK), by the initiative of the Society of Friendship “Manchester – St.Petersburg”.

    Since 2005, the Victory Day is celebrated annually in Manchester (UK), by the initiative of the Society of Friendship “Manchester – St.Petersburg”.

    The traditional wreath-laying ceremony at the monument to the Unknown Soldier “Cenotaph” (St.Peter’s Square) waattended by the resentatives of Manchester City Council, British and Russian war veterans, representatives of the Russian Embassy in Great Britain.

    A.V.Prokhorenko, Member of the St.Petersburg Government, Chairman of the Committee for External Relations, sent his greetings to Catherine Denks, President of the Friendship Society “Manchester – St.Petersburg,” and Bernard Selby, program coordinator of the Victory Day celebrations in Manchester: “... an important milestone in the annals of Russian-British friendship, in which there is a significant contribution of Manchester, are Arctic convoys. We revere the memory of the heroic past of our countries, and we find much honour in annually receiving in St.Petersburg the delegation of veterans of Arctic convoys...”

    In 2012, the 50th anniversary of friendly relations between Manchester and St Petersburg is celebrated. The year of the date is marked by a number of projects and initiatives, including the recently-held Days of Manchester and the Days of St.Petersburg; performance of the representatives of the Northern Royal College of Music at the Neva riversides. Various institutions and universities of the two cities are actively cooperating, and the contacts in the people’s diplomacy are also active. Long-standing friendly ties unite the St.Petersburg Association for International Cooperation and Friendship Society, “Manchester – St.Petersburg”.
