On November 29, 2011, an inter-confession round table “Religious Media in St.Petersburg: Promotion of a Dialogue” was held, organized by St.Petersburg Committee for External Relations in conjunction with the Center for State-Confessional Relations at the Academy of Public Administration.

On November 29, 2011, an inter-confession round table “Religious Media in St.Petersburg: Promotion of a Dialogue” was held, organized by St.Petersburg Committee for External Relations in conjunction with the Center for State-Confessional Relations at the Academy of Public Administration.

S.L.Markov, Deputy Chairman of the CER, welcomed the participants and noted that over the last decade, the influence of religious organizations in all spheres of modern life significantly increased. The confessions expressed their opinions and provide the answers to the current issues of concern of Russian society. Naturally, the religious media covers a very wide range of topics that relate to education, educational work with young people, ethnic relations and social conflicts, environment protection, creative activities, as well as helping a person in the problem of moral choice in solving life’s conflicts.

The leaders of the printed media, radio, and television stations of the traditional religious organizations in St.Petersburg discussed the issues of mutual interest: the potential of religion-based media in strengthening the civil unity of Russian society, the increase in circulation of printed religious publications and their distribution, experience with different social and age groups, cooperation of religious organizations in the implementation of charitable inter-confessional projects, as well as positive and negative trends in the interaction of religious organizations with the secular mass media.

The round table resilted in a “portfolio” for inter-confessional cooperation of the media. These include the joint development of information materials on the religious St.Petersburg for the staff of the secular media, printing periodical materials about important events and dates of the traditional religions of the city.

V.I.Danilov, Head of Center for State-Confessional Relations at the North-Western Academy of Public Administration, in his closing remarks, invited the representatives of the religious media to participate in the preparation of a new training course for members of the secular mass media.
