    President of the Republic of Finland Visited St.Petersburg

    On June 28, 2011 in St.Petersburg, Ms. Tarja Halonen, President of the Republic of Finland, and M.E. Oseevskiy, Vice-Governor of St.Petersburg, Head of St.Petersburg Administration, participated in a ceremony devoted to the completion of international project “Clean Baltic,” the last stage of which was the launch of permanent installation of automated dispensing the chemical reagents for phosphorus removal at the Northern Wastewater Treatment Plant.

    On June 28, 2011 in St.Petersburg, Ms. Tarja Halonen, President of the Republic of Finland, and M.E. Oseevskiy, Vice-Governor of St.Petersburg, Head of St.Petersburg Administration, participated in a ceremony devoted to the completion of international project “Clean Baltic,” the last stage of which was the launch of permanent installation of automated dispensing the chemical reagents for phosphorus removal at the Northern Wastewater Treatment Plant.

    The project “Clean Baltic” was launched in 2005. It was aimed at introducing the modern technologies of deep phosphorus removal from wastewater at the largest sewage treatment plant of St.Petersburg - Central Aeration Station, South-West Wastewater Treatment Plants, North Aeration Station. The project united the efforts of St.Petersburg Government, State Unitary Enterprise “Vodokanal St.Petersburg”, the John Nurminen Foundation (Finland), Ministry of Environment of Finland, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA).

    Since June 28, St.Petersburg meets in full the new recommendations of Helsinki Commission for the Protection of the Baltic Sea - the phosphorus content in the total discharge of urban waste water does not exceed 0.5 mg per liter.
