    Geshe Karrenbrock, Representative of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Russia, Visited St.Petersburg

    On November 18, 2009, A.V. Prokhorenko, Chairman of St.Petersburg Committee for External Relations, met in Smolny with Mrs Geshe Karrenbrock, Representative of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Russia.

    On November 18, 2009, A.V. Prokhorenko, Chairman of St.Petersburg Committee for External Relations, met in Smolny with Mrs Geshe Karrenbrock, Representative of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Russia.

    During the meeting, Mrs Karrenbrock handed a formal letter of invitation by Antonio Guterres, UN High Commissioner for Refugees, to V.I. Matvienko, Governor of St.Petersburg, to attend the third annual Dialogue of the UN High Commissioner and the «round table» of city mayors «Humanitarian Problems in the Urbanization Context», which is to be held in Geneva at the Palais des Nations, on December 8 thtrough 10, 2009.

    The opinions on cooperation between St.Petersburg and the UNHCR, the migration situation in St.Petersburg, the measures of St.Petersburg Government to improve the legislative base, and the practice of securing the human rights for refugees and migrants were also exchanged at the meeting. Mrs Karrenbrock appreciated the work being done in St.Petersburg to develop the social and economic assistance and social integration of refugees and displaced persons, and conveyed the congratulations of Antonio Guterres, UN High Commissioner for Refugees, on winning the honorary award of UNESCO – Madanjeet Singh Prize for the Promotion of Tolerance and Non-Violence, by the program «Tolerance» elaborated by St.Petersburg Government.
