On January 30, 2017 in Smolny, Deputy Chairman of the Committee on foreign relations of St. Petersburg Vyacheslav Kalganov met with an Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Djibouti to the Russian Federation Kamil Mohamed Ali.

During the conversation, the parties were discussing prospects for the development of bilateral cooperation. Vyacheslav Kalganov said that St. Petersburg is open for dialogue both in the economic sphere and in the field of tourism and logistics.

Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Republic of Djibouti to the Russian Federation Kamil Mohamed Ali responded that access to the free economic zone in Djibouti could provide an alternative to the Jebel Ali free economic zone (UAE) and would be mutually beneficial.

In order to expand and strengthen contacts, Vyacheslav Kalganov invited Kamil Mohamed Ali to take part in a business forum to be held in October 2018 in St. Petersburg, and invited partners to organize a presentation of Djibouti as a part of the tourism forum in St. Petersburg.

It was discussed the possibility of opening the St. Petersburg information business center in Djibouti as well. The parties noted that the opening of such a center could provide the strengthening of cooperation in various fields.

Following the conversation, it was decided to develop a program of possible joint projects.
